"Riesentraube" translates as "giant bunch of grapes." One of its outstanding features is the large number of flowers produced per cluster -- up to 350 flowers! Flower clusters appear as compact floral sprays giving way to large bunches of 20-40 red fruits. German heirloom introduced 1993, sent by Dr. Carolyn Male. Originally from Germany, it may also have been grown by the Pennsylvania Dutch as early as 1855. The most unusual tomato we have grown. 1-1/2 -- 1-1/4 in. fruits with exceptionally pointed blossom ends. Compact vine growth. Excellent, full flavor similar to that found in beefsteak tomatoes. A great salad tomato. Indeterminate. Note: perhaps because it's closer to being a wild tomato, this variety seems to have naturally lower seed germination.
